For 2010, Speed Wong Racing has committed itself to its best performance on and off the track. Through 2009, Speed Wong Racing entered multiple cars in three different series, spread among NASCAR and Porsche cars. 2010 sees Speed Wong Racing continuing its commitment to Porsche and NASCAR with specific targeted race schedules combined with a full season in a Le Mans Prototype race car.
The race program started out quietly and small in 2003. It was simply a father and son, neither whom had any racing experience, who bought a Legends race car on a whim. Unfortunately the father didn't know anything about mechanics, let alone racing, which led to hiring people who did know. The then 13 year old son grew into a capable young man who won a few races, met a lot of good people, and has become a teammate of great mentors in the racing world. From that one car to today, in just a few years, Speed Wong Racing has grown to have a stable of race cars, race trailers and heavy duty transport trucks. We travel across the country and into Canada to compete in mainly the NASCAR West and East, and the American Le Mans Series.
In 2007 Speed Wong Racing began simultaneously racing a factory built Porsche race car, the GT3 Cup car, in selected races. Brian Wong has adapted well to the Porsches and began racing in the IMSA Challenge Series in 2008. He was 4th in points for the season despite missing 6 races due to attending college in Boston. Through an association with long time sports car champion, Dennis Aase, Speed Wong Racing has AASCO Motorsports preparing and crewing the Porsche race cars again in 2009.
In 2008 Speed Wong Racing attracted its first major sponsor, Lucas Oil Products, for the West program. For the Porsche series, we were grateful to sponsors:
Dreyer’s Ice Cream, Quiksilver and Northeastern University who contributed to our program.
In keeping with our 'fun' attitude, Speed Wong Racing has gone off road to participate in 'pre running' the Baja 500 for the past 3 years. While not in the actual race, we have a good time running the same course, the week right before the race. We hope to be able to be a part of the Baja races in the future. Meanwhile, we continue to do a bit of 2 and 4 wheel off roading, when not on the pavement with the race team.
Speed Wong Racing, LLC is extremely grateful for the great members on our Team. Each Team Member is selected solely based upon their character, as we want to be surrounded by quality people. On a typical long race day, twenty- five dedicated Team Members arrive early in the morning and work hard all day, not leaving until we load up and leave at midnight. Our Crew is a great combination of race car fans, motorheads, young and seasoned veterans. To make the Team possible, our Team Manager, Crew Chief, Car Chiefs, Spotters, Motor Specialists, Tire Specialists, transport drivers, mechanics, support friends, and race car drivers all come together to have fun racing. Racing is a sport with highs and lows, sometimes we go home without a good finish and often we work late because we’ve done well. Regardless, our goal is have fun and we always leave with a lot of smiles and laughs playing jokes on each other.
The spotters take care of the drivers on the track, the mechanics, car chiefs, tire specialists, engine tuners and crew all support each other on the Team. Camaraderie is important, the seasoned veterans ply their race craft, teaching the young enthusiastic members, the drivers coming in often making guest appearances, the entire Team depending on each other, all make our Team one of the hardest working, most productive, and it is our hope, one of the more fun teams to be on.
To support the team, several semi trucks pull large, double decked trailers to the track. A tremendous assortment of tools, parts, and support equipment are all managed by the Team to be ready to win on Saturday night. Also supporting the Team, our friends and family who root the Team on, are welcome to the Speed Wong Racing, LLC suite at Irwindale Speedway.
